This Lotus Award category recognizes a Business Partner who has developed an effective solution for a not-for-profit, environmental or humanitarian effort or in support of broader civic participation. The AngelFlight Mission Control system is a Notes/Domino solution developed and implemented by Lotus 911 that allows the nonprofit Angel Flight network to coordinate flight plans for private pilots to take sick children for urgent medical care in locations they can't otherwise reach. The system was created in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when FEMA requested assistance in moving medical supplies and equipment. The volunteers and the pilots of Angel Flight who donate their time and resources to this effort are the real winners here and we are proud to help them in their efforts. |

| Angel Flight of Georgia provides free air transportation for people that have a medical need that can’t be filled in their local area. They believe that the cost of travel should never stand in the way of receiving medical care, and therefore take flight to get people to the hope of lifesaving treatment at no cost to the family. Missions include routine treatment flights, compassionate care, and others referred to us by healthcare providers. In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, demands on Angel Flight skyrocketed exponentially. FEMA directors approached Angel Flight following the category 4 hurricane with a request for an increased frequency of flights, to including not only organized transport of patients but also medical supplies and equipment. This request increased Angel Flights aviation load from an average of 3 flights/week prior to the hurricane, to an amazing 60 flights/week following the destruction in southern US. It was following this development, and during the outpouring of support in the region, that IBM Atlanta contacted Lotus 911 and Ascendant Technology with a request to assist with the design and implementation of a Lotus Domino based solution. Together Ascendant Technology and Lotus 911 rapidly developed and implemented an application that created a donation center, provided access for patients to request transportation and for pilots to sign up to donate their time and services to the mission. Prior to this portal, the system was very inefficient and all the processes were handled manually, which allowed for easy error and created great disorganization. By automating the system with Lotus Notes/Domino, Angel Flight was able to provide a greater number of flights, allowing them to aid a greater number of patients in their treatment. Over the past 3 years, Lotus 911 has continued to work with Angel Flight to expand the system, provide further automation, and improve usability. All the patient intake information, physician verification/approval, pilot/plane assignments, departure and destination facility information, mission coordination and post mission close out information is captured, compiled and stored in the database. A standard workflow process has been implemented to ensure consistency independent of the staff or volunteer compiling the patient intake information and creating the mission packages. All pilot, aircraft, destination and departure facilities, patient and physical contact information is stored and index for future re-use. .Mission packages are created and sent to the pilot for the completion of the mission. The new system allowed the team to create new missions in 1/8th of the time as the manual process and the error rate has been reduced by a factor of 10! The existing team can now handle 6 times as many missions with the same staff and is now ready to handle the next crisis. In addition, the system is now being deployed to other regional Angel Flight centers. |
