Just get it submitted by
FRIDAY and you should be okay. You'll be
able to compete against Tim
Tripcony's submission for Dennis,
as long as you submit your nomination by
FRIDAY.

My sense of humor is perfectly fine, I don't see this as a joke. If this post has been about the Lotus CTO award I'm sure people entering in for that award would not take kindly to it and see it as a way of trying to cut down on the competition.

Makes no difference to me, as I'm not entering, competing, judging, or doing anything else in that area. But I can see where the humor may well be lost on some...

I do think the misleading dates is in poor taste. If you really wanted to let people know the deadline you should have just said it outright. Why the subterfuge if you knew people wouldn't get the joke?
