Notes 8 Beta 2 is available

Like you didn't already know.

So here's a few things maybe you didn't know, although I'll point out that this build is every bit as new to me as it is to you.  (The last build for Design Partners was early Feb.)

1) Double right-click to close a window isn't gone.  It's not shown in the preferences list, but if you turn it on manually in the NOTES.INI, then it works.  I will research what the exact control is and post it here later.

2) You did read the license agreement didn't you?  Some interesting stuff in there...
The evaluation period begins on the date that You agree to the terms of this Agreement and ends after 90 days.

The following are Other IBM Programs licensed with the Programs:
IBM WebSphere Portal 6.0
IBM WebSphere Application Server 6.1
IBM WebSphere Application Server Toolkit 6.1

With the BETA!?  Sweet!  Where do I get 'em?
If You use the Google Desktop Search feature of the Program...

If You use the Yahoo! Web Search feature of the Program...

I knew about the Google relationship.  The Yahoo thing is new to me.

By the way, I'm really kidding about expecting people to read the 23 PAGE license agreement.

3) Don't forget to replace your mail template, THEN WORK FROM A LOCAL REPLICA.  You'll miss out on some features of the 8 template if you try to use it against a file on a 7 server.

1 - Yippee!

Time for me to get a ticket to Hong Kong again Emoticon

2 - I would appreciate knowing how to set the double right-click. I copied my the preference number from Notes 7 - and this worked. Until I changed the preferences in Notes 8, then it stopped working !

3 - what happens in 90 days? does that apply to the server apps or the client too? if its the client, thats a shame. ive been working exclusively with client/designer betas since r4.5.

4 - Nathan,

I would appreciate your advise about how to configure multiple versions of Notes on the same machine (before I install the Notes 8 Client). It's been a long time since I ran beta code of my laptop, so would appreciate a refresher on this topic if one is available).

Thanks in advance.

Ian

5 - The Beta 2 install tries find previous versions of Lotus Notes by looking at the registry. If it finds a previous verson it will upgrade/overwrite the old version by default (you get no option to change install directory from the installer later on)

If you want to install them "side-by-side" this is how I did it on my XP box:

First I took a backup of the registry settings:
(HKEY_LOKAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/LOTUS registry keys)

Then I changed the paths in the registry to where to install the beta 2 client (I changd all "notes" related paths in my registry to point to c:\program files\lotus\notesR8\ and c:\program files\lotus\notesR8\data)

After that I renamed my regular notes directory to
c:\program files\notesR7

(raname it back to the old name after you have installed beta 2).

You might also want to copy your program folder in the programs menu to something other than "Lotus Applications" if you want to keep the old application paths.

Then a ran the beta 2 installer, and installed beta 2 in c:\program files\lotus\notesR8 (you cant change directory from the installer (well I wasnt able to do that any way)).

As always this is done at your own risk

6 - @3 - Nothing HAPPENS at the end of 90 days except that you're supposed to uninstall it. There's no enforcement built into the code for that, though. It's strictly a licensing requirement.

So nudge, nudge, wink, wink and all that.

7 - @5

I am running both Notes 7 and Notes 8 beta on my workstation. I leave the Notes 7 on the USB stick and run it when I need it. I have ran into a number of UI problems that I have reported. Nathan, It broke my javascript window technique. Hope they fix it for the release. Notes 8 seems to run some portions of the Notes interface faster than Notes 7 which I was surprise given that it is Eclipse.
