Getting the most out of Notes 8 Standard - Pt 1

Following up on recent blog posts regarding performance in Notes 8 Standard, Bruce helps me out with a couple of his own application launch videos -- one on a native XP machine (3Ghz, 2GB RAM), and one on a MacBook in Parallels (allocated 1GB RAM).

Check them out on the Jing project.

On native XP, 17 seconds from activation to password.  13 seconds from password to Home page (with his email pre-loading in the background.)  Clicking the mail tab for the first time takes 4 seconds.  Calendar for the first time takes 8 seconds.  Contact -- another 4 seconds.  Bruce's SysInfo details.

In Parallels, 24 seconds from activation to password. 6 seconds from password to Home page (no email pre-load this time.)  6 seconds for first email screen. 9 seconds for calendar.  And 4 seconds for contacts.

Not great times, but not the kind of "2 minutes to start and 30 seconds to open mail" that we've heard elsewhere.

The mighty Doug Conmy has been helping me with some guidance on identifying performance bottlenecks with Windows environments.  Stay tuned for more details on how to find out what might be happening, and how to get Notes 8 Standard to run faster!

Comments

1 - Notice on the Parallels screen capture the flashing drive light of the VM. This shows you the hard disk read and writes.

2 - Looking forward to it Nathan. Bruce - this is why I don't foresee Standard on a Stick.

Nathan, how fast is the hard drive on your laptop? Mine's 4200 RPM but I have a 1.6GHz with 2 GB ram and don't see your performance.
