Answer to a blog comment

Over at Mr. Brill's site, there was a discussion a few days ago about ODF vs. OOXML.  Tony, an long-time MS booster at Ed's asks the question
Can someone tell me how limiting my choice is a good thing? And how the adoption of OOXML as well as ODF would be a bad thing for the industry? Yes it would be great to have one document format. But we don’t.

What if I propose a new traffic standard?  I want the new Freeman Stop sign to be green.  It's one little change.  No big deal.  I'm going to submit my new standard for implementation across all the municipalities in the US.

What's wrong with competing standards?  How could limiting choice be a good thing?  Why would adoption of the Freeman Stop sign be a bad thing for drivers?  If some municipalities choose to have green stop signs, does that harm their drivers?  Does it harm drivers in neighboring communities?

1 - I like cities that have those horizontal stop-lights... reminds me how lucky I am not to be color blind.

2 - Nathan, can you please stop giving these guys weird ideas?
They don't need your help and they might actually try to go ahead with the green stop sign.

3 - An excellent analogy, Nathan.

4 - When you make good points like this, please manually trackback ... I am not sure you've lured the MS crowd over to daily reading yet Emoticon

5 - @3. Too late. They have already gone ahead and started driving on the right (wrong) side of the road. So actually, green stop signs are very fitting to distinguish from the places where they drive on the left (right) side of the road.

Maybe we should have designed our cities wiht one way streets.

6 - Oops, I was responding to Viktor not Ben.
