Jimmy, the sales rep was nowhere to be seen! I called him and asked. Redmond came in with a posse and IBM sent a knife to a gun fight. I was one of the last Notes developer/ consultants out there. I created several apps tying their various and sundry db environs together ( Access to SAP, etc) I even developed a security request management app that was the only app delivered on time and on budget in '03, a strong argument for RAD in a Notes environment. Sad,.. because so much $ spent (wasted) to attempt to convert all the Notes apps to a new platform.

I was involved with the sales process when Home Depot made the decision to migrate from Notes. I'm not sure how much I can say in a public forum, but I'm sure you and I have the same source on how Home Depot chose to engage with IBM around their decision and migration plan. What really amazed me was their near-simultaneous decision to implement IBM WebSphere Portal, which would have only benefitted the Notes/Domino environment.

Could I send someone back? Of course, but as Nathan points out, the cost of throwing good money after bad to move back probably doesn't make sense right now. Let's see what happens with Notes 8 and composite applications.

Nathan. Your memory does serve you. Here is a headline from a recent news story.

ATLANTA (AP) -- A Superior Court judge Monday denied a request by a group of shareholders of Home Depot Inc. (HD) to temporarily block the world's largest home improvement store chain from paying former Chief Executive Bob Nardelli any more of his $210 million severance package.

The full story can be found here..

{ Link }

Yes, that's right $210 MILLION. Nice bonus. I wonder how that equates to the cost of the rip and replace, (sorry, "migration"). Nice reward for someone who makes a major decision within the organization based on the "look" of a product, and not the benefits and productivity of the product.

I wonder how many of HD customers buy products from them because one "looks" nicer than the other. There is probably some level of this, but I don't really see the local contractor saying "Gee, I like the look of this hammer with the blue handle". I would think that they are looking for the hammer, or saw or whatever that will give the best performance over the lifespan of it's use.

If only the people at the top thought the same way.

I get so upset at companies that hire executives, and then after a time say "You know, things just aren't working out, here's millions of dollars for you efforts as you leave. Thanks, have a nice life".

Amen to that. I've been waiting to see when a group of shareholders would have the stones to challenge a CEO on zero-ROI projects like mail migrations.

If memory serves, he has a pretty fat parachute. He'd have earned this if he can't justify a financial operational imparative.

(For the record, I'd have the same concern if he's said migrate from Notes to some open source mail package, or from Exchange to Sun, or from Exchange to Notes. Mail migrations are 99% of the time a complete waste of money.)
